The obstacle to gentleness in dressage is arrogance. It is keeping yourself and the horse as separate beings instead of seeing that you both share this one life. This seeing and relating to the horse as a part of yourself is a basic of the centaur mindset. Skill in dressage is not about building yourself up so you or others may think well of you. The point of skillful dressage is to be able to communicate with the horse. It is how to be considerate to the horse. Arrogance destroys our gentleness and builds aggression. Aggression puts a wedge between your horse and yourself. So it is that a false dressage is born and is constantly seeking self justification. When confronted with gentleness those who choose or are swept away by false dressage become very hostile and offended because their actions are not collaborated. To stay to the path of gentleness eventually bring sanity and a happiness which is not available to the arrogant. Skillful means is an attitude and a practice based in the consideration of the horse. The horse, in its presence, will lead you to higher and higher levels opening itself up to you because you have opened yourself to the horse.
