The odds of winning an Olympic medal…1 in 662,000 The odds of dying in a plane crash…1 in 1,200,000 The odds of becoming a movie star…1 in 1,505,000 The odds of getting aplastic anemia…1 in 2,000,000 For those of you from Western PA- there are a little more than 2,000,000 people in all of Washington, Allegheny, Greene, Butler, and Westmoreland Counties combined. When Addison was admitted to the hospital in February and her doctor asked to speak to me and my husband in a room away from Addison, I knew she was going to tell us she had leukemia. As we walked down the hall to a private room, I kept thinking shes going to say she has leukemia. Oh my God, Addison has leukemia. When we got to the room, her doctor said I am highly suspicious that your daughter has leukemia. At that moment our world stopped. After she was done explaining all of the tests that would be done to confirm a leukemia diagnosis, I said, what else could it be? Her doctor said very rarely, there is something called aplastic anemia, but it is highly unlikely. As I look back on Addisons symptoms and how rare aplastic anemia is, I completely understand why leukemia was everyones first thought. Of all of the wonderful families we have met at Childrens hospital, we know 1 other little girl with AA. I have connected with so many great families from all across the country and Canada, but the odds of us meeting many other families in our area are very low. In all of the United States, 600 to 900 people will be diagnosed with AA each year. I always knew Addi was 1 in a million. Turns out shes 1 in 2,000,000.
