The one entrenched standard of Russian naval warfare doctrine is laying mines. In Soviet days, it was actually law that every Russian ship, military or civilian had to have the capability to lay mines. Its cheap, quick and dirty. But, it works. Even the nuclear powered battle cruiser Russia has can lay mines. Soviet naval doctrine, was to lay mines in targeted western ports and littoral waters or major choke points like the Straits of Gibraltar, Hormuz, Malacca Straits, English Channel, etc. right before a war would begin, had there ever been a war. Russia doesnt have any longer, the world wide capabilities they used to. But, this mine threat would be a heavy factor in Baltic waters, especially if the Baltic states land link to Poland were severed by a Russian advance into Lithuania.
