“The only hope you have is to accept the fact that youre already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner youll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function. All war depends upon it.” This is one of my favorite quotes from the HBO mini-series called “Band of Brothers,” about the experiences of Easy Company during WWII. In this scene, captain Spears is addressing a soldier who is cowering in his foxhole, crying, and afraid to fire on the enemy. I have always loved this line, because the first half of the statement describes how we should view ourselves as believers in Christ, “already dead.” As Paul the Apostle declares: “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” So, perhaps our line of encouragement should be as follows: “One true fact that you must accept is that you are already dead – You have been crucified with Christ! The sooner you accept that, the sooner you’ll be able to function the way a true soldier of Christ is supposed to function.
