The original King of Surf Guitar, Dick Dale was born on May 4, 1937, making him 77 today. Born Richard Monsour, he grew up listening to his relatives play traditional Middle Eastern instruments. He then incorporated Middle Eastern scales into his early brand of rock and roll, coupled with a love of surfing, and forever breaking guitarists out of the blues box.
