The other day, I heard some folks claim that There arent any kaiju movies with good human stories to balance the kaiju action, but maybe SOME DAY there will be! ...It reminded me that, outside of this fandom, its difficult to find someone who understands kaiju films, much less someone who WANTS to understand. Its as though kaiju films exist outside of the parameters of every other genre, and therefore are neither beholden to the tenants of good filmmaking, nor deserving of proper critical analysis. In short, to a sobering number of film fans, these arent REAL films. The idea that these movies have directors, actors, writings, special effects technicians, composers, and entire crews who work hard and believe in their craft isnt even a factor that crosses ones mind. These are just weird anomalies, pooped out by some hacks in a foreign country for a tiny audience that has no taste or objective appreciation of film. ...Thats sorta how it feels sometimes.
