The other day, President Obama said these words on higher education in America: “What I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everybody who’s willing to work for it,” President Obama said in a video posted last night. “It’s something we can accomplish, and it’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anybody in the world.” This proposal is tremendous. The President has aligned himself with the viewpoint that we must invest in our people in order to benefit the sum total of our parts. If we deny any individual the right to the opportunities afforded by higher education, we are doing ourselves a disservice - free public learning, in any inception, is the surest, most sound way to preserve and strengthen our society. This is fact, and cannot be disputed. And, even though this proposal is only a small step in a much larger fight, it is at least leading us down a more stable path. Now, the realities of implementing this type of program are much starker than may appear. It will likely prove impossible for President Obama to work within the confines of political gridlock and constitutional restriction in order to move these ideas forward. But, from a symbolic standpoint, the President has used his bully pulpit effectively - while he may lack the authority to create such a measure at the present time, the weight of his words have built power behind a vital necessity for the American people. Well said, sir - you have my support, and I am certain you have the support of countless others. #educationpolicy #educationisaright #publicinvestment #presidentobama #communitycollege #enlightenment
