The overwhelming majority of non-Mandarin speakers are Han - TopicsExpress

The overwhelming majority of non-Mandarin speakers are Han Chinese, not members of Chinas minority nationalities which make up less than 10% of the Chinese population. For example the two largest minority nationalities most often discussed in the Western media, Tibetans and Uighurs, make up less than 2% of the population of China and about 4% of the 400 million non-Mandarin speakers (of course millions of Tibetans and Uighurs also speak Mandarin). The non-Mandarin speakers are mostly southern Han who speak a variety of regional dialects such as Cantonese, Hakka, etc. There are 5 official languages in China: Mandarin, Tibetan, Uighur, Mongolian and Zhuang. The languages of Chinas 56 national minorities are protected and many which were never written have been codified since Liberation in 1949. Chinas national minority policy is the most progressive in the world and protects and supports the languages and cultures of Chinese diverse minority peoples. The slanders and calumnies directed against the PRC for its treatment of minorities are all the more heinous given what the Central government has done to protect and sustain the national minorities of China. And this is in stark contrast to the racist, assimilationist and genocidal policies of the West. businessweek/articles/2014-09-23/say-that-in-mandarin-please
