The pachuco stood outside the Rex theatre resting his back on the maroon colored tiles, proud and showing off a well shaped pompadour that had a rich gleam from a liberal application of Four Roses pomade. The folded handkerchief neatly placed on his collar was to fend off any hair cream that could disrespect his bright blue long sleeve shirt. This time he was not eyeing the girl in the ticket booth but attentively watching the shoe shine boy work his magic on his double souled pointed shoes. He particularly liked the pop of the luster rag as the boy snapped it twice. It sounded like the heels of a marine snapping to attention. He would crack a smile followed by an oralee. This was big, it was class in the pachuco culture, it was a status symbol that made The Man - the man that the rucas would be proud of. He would greet a passer-by with another Oralee but kept a stern demeanor so as not to lose any of his cool but his thoughts were: Simon ese this is me, the Vato from the barrio el Sal si Puedes. These are memories from when I worked at the Rex theatre at 12 years old. I sold popcorn and hot dogs. I walked around the isles uttering esquite, esquite or Hot dogs, hot dogs. These are the days we talk about in this forum and remember and cherish because they made us who we are today - Simon Que Si
