The pads on the inside of lids of leather cases sometimes contain a single large leaf or flower. These appear to have become suddenly popular in 1848, and remain popular through 1851. As the flowered brass mats get introduced (around 1854), the flowered velvet pads drop out of use. This is odd, is is as if the flowers have migrated from the velvet to the brass. I hope to have pinpointed dates for these specific pad designs later.
