The pendulum of race appeared to swing wildly in America since the 60s. It seemed to swing from exclusion because of race to inclusion because of race. In effect, however, the pendulum remained static, stuck in race. Whenever race is seen as the answer, power is behind it. In the past, it was the power of white elites to perpetuate racial abuse. Today, it is the power of race to granting concessions, entitling one to redress. The problem remains and that is why antagonism is still with us. In the past, the insistence on race excluded and now includes but cannot redeem, cannot help develop; it offers only the illusion of competitiveness. The true answer is in rejecting race. Not as the typical assertion of "color blindness." No, I want you to see me as I am but I want us all to reject the totalistic impulse of seeing the person as scenery in the drama of color.
