The people of Botswana live and work in a political system that sprang from roots in both their own cultures and the British tradition. The interests of the elite, which dominated at Independence, have remained an important influence ever since, leading some observers to suggest that Botswana is a democracy in name only. In the process, the evolution of economic and political institutions from the early post-Independence years influenced the outcome. Leadership and ideas were also important in guiding the underlying forces.
