The poorest of the poor survive at Rs. 17 a day in villages and Rs. 23 a day in cities, latest data released by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) on Thursday revealed. Data for 2011-12 said the bottom 5% of the population had a monthly per-capita expenditure (MCPE) of R521.44 in rural areas and Rs. 700.50 in urban areas. On the other end of the spectrum, top 5%of the population had an MPCE of R4,481 in rural areas and R10,282 in urban areas. These indicators are amongst the most important measures of the level of living and are crucial inputs for poverty estimation by the Planning Commission.
