The post about being short and the one about the constant rocket attacks in Danang reminded me of our last few days in country. Our unit, 1st Radio Bn, was pulled out in April/May 1971. The day before we left we were sent to an area near Danang airport, I think it was on Marble Mtn but not certain. It was higher than the surrounding area and we could see the runway. A few nights before, the VC hit the runway with rockets. 4 of us were walking along the road inside the perimeter after a night of very modest drinking (slight exaggeration) and talking about how horrible it would be to be killed on the runway taking off. One guy said or tonight when we are so short! About this time, the guys manning the bunker we thought was empty, dropped a flair in the mortar. They laughed their ^$$#$ off at the 4 of diving onto the asphalt busting knees and elbows. Pretty sure that was not the first time they pulled that one off.
