The power of water is not intuitive. Its so insubstantial that we can push our hand straight onto it; dive into it; gargle and spit it out. Yet swing a bucket full of water and feel the enormous momentum it carries. Then imagine holding fast against a wall of the stuff. Whenever we go into the mountains with the family, I often stop and discuss the pretty stream and how powerful it must become to move boulders the size of houses, as it does in flood. That respect is always to be renewed, consciously reinforced, and never allowed to fade into complacency and tragedy.
