The priorities my team and I share is to fix the strained relationship between the Student Association and UOIT/Durham College. We aim for practical, achievable goals. In fixing the relationship between both parties, we must also ensure our money is spent properly as to benefit all students. We want to be developing plans and events to create profit which can be spent, for example, on bettering the representation of students toward other institutions. Among many things, we aim to bridge the gap between the board and students by facilitating active communication. We are all new faces - not the same who caused issues that made out SA suffer. We want change and are prepared to act upon it. A key aspect lacking between the board and student relationship is the communication barrier. We want to break that barrier by cancelling all in-camera sessions “transparency” and by broadcasting all meetings. We also want to address international students. The amount of international students in our schools have increased and we would like to offer a welcoming environment for those coming from other nations. We want to be able to provide them with support and information they may need – especially when first arriving to our campuses. Our team aims to advocate for international students regarding their high tuition fees and increase scholarships/bursaries available to them. UOIT is the school with the highest number of students on OSAP; consequently, we aim to drop tuition fees for all students. From a transportation perspective, we would like to decrease prices for our parking pass and push for more parking lots. We also want to advocate for U-pass price drops and better transportation services. We are aware that many services remain available only through our North Campus and would like to change that. We want to expand student services to downtown and Whitby Campuses and create regular office hours where students can meet their elected officers. We want to maximize the quality of student life on our campuses. This includes supporting the downtown campus gym intentions and investigating the prices, variety, and quality of food sold in all schools. For clubs and societies, the current space booking process is difficult. We would like to facilitate event planning and easy approval for associations needing space to meet. In order for this aspect of student experience to prosper, there needs to be an increase of funding for these professional associations. We also aim to ensure that executive members from clubs and societies receive sufficient training and management skills. Our schools lack space – whether that is a place to study, pray, or a place to work out in our downtown campus. We want to increase study space and create spaces where students can relax like a student lounge. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) also needs to be planned in such a way that is democratic, productive, and provides actual outcome for students. Our aspirations are those of a student and we want to see change too - we are all new faces.
