The problem with this head to head debate is that its the wrong format. This originated in the US Presidential elections when folk were making a choice between two candidates for a personal office. It didnt really work for UK general elections, because you are picking a whole parliament and not just a prime minister. But it certainly doesnt work for a referendum on a constitutional issue. The format is all about who is the better debater? (well, Salmond is, thats never been in quesiton) but so what. We are picking a constitutional settlement for the next 300 years - how two men perform is pretty irrelevant to that. A panel discussion, with insights from financial experts and economists, would be more helpful. This type of McPunch and Judy show is just useless. Tell me. Does anyone, who wasnt already convinced, feel any the wiser?
