The profound experiences of being an extra. Most people do not - TopicsExpress

The profound experiences of being an extra. Most people do not realize that extras are the most unrecognized uncredited underpaid talents in the entertainment industry. Extras are round up like cattle into holding areas and called to the set by the 2nd AD aka wanna-be directors. Extras must wait until all cast and crew members eat dinner before they can eat with a resemblance of dignity. Extras are looked down at from all members of the production when on-set. It is sad but true that extras are the bottom feeders of the film/tv project for which they are employed. If you have one line, you are treated like gold, but if you are an extra, you are treated like the human prop that you are. I think that extras are an integral part of the filmmaking process and should be treated as such. But that will never happen. If you want to work as an extra, be prepared to get paid less than everyone else, be treated like garbage, and never actually be seen on-camera. If you can handle that kind of job, then by all means do pursue extra work in Atlanta or New Orleans. If you want to be an actor, get an agent and audition for lead/supporting roles in Los Angeles or New York!
