The question WHO is John Hurt’s DR. WHO has Whovian’s guessing - TopicsExpress

The question WHO is John Hurt’s DR. WHO has Whovian’s guessing and debating since he appeared at the end of “The Name of the Doctor”. The actor’s interview comment, posted on this page, that he was told that he is playing the 9th Doctor has only added to the mystery and dare I say fun in guessing the answer. So here I go with my detailed guess. So please pardon the length. I believe Steven Moffat chose his wording very carefully and when John Hurt turns to face the audience our attentions went directly to the subtitle: “Introducing John Hurt as the Doctor”. Every Whovian was forced to make the immediate assumption, bad word, that Hurt is meant to be our Doctor, but is he as we’re left with the how? So I ask could Moffat be playing word games with us as John Hurt’s introduction does not specifically say “as Dr. Who” and that could be a SUBTLE difference. Hurt stated he was TOLD he was to be the 9th Doctor and if that proves true it pushes the three “modern Doctors” up one regeneration making Matt Smith the 12th Doctor, but Hurt’s statement cannot be true. For no other reason than Matt has told people at Comic Con that during the Christmas Special he regenerates into the 12th Doctor, I mentioned that interview on this very page, and there have been postings about the same topic with one concerning an audition script being used to find the actor to play the 12th Doctor. So once more we are left with WHO really is John Hurt’s Doctor, if that is the proper name for him and not a ruse by Moffat to get our interest in the next season’s opening show. To me John Hurt is in reality a repository for the Evil thoughts of the Doctor we have all known since William Hartnell. Thereby keeping the different Doctor’s persona’s basically on an even keel helping humanity and looking for the possible good in his own enemies. Probably the most notables being when the 10th Doctor attempted to reform and save the Master, or farther back the 4th Doctor attempting to get Davros to see the error of his ideas in one great debate scene. Now think of the location where John Hurt makes his entrance: “The Tomb of the Doctor”. The one place the Doctor FEARS to go. What better place to keep the Doctor’s Mr. Hyde? You may say this is a little far off the wall, but let me give you an example of a Jekyll and Hyde Doctor that fits my theory that we should all be familiar with: Colin Baker’s 6th Doctor. When Colin makes his entrance he is raving mad from a bad and incomplete regeneration. He argues with himself and verbally attacks his other regenerations. The 6th Doctor even attempts to kill his companion Perpugilliam Brown (Peri) who had been traveling with the 5th Doctor and viewed this regeneration. The 6th Doctor’s anger outweighs everything until the death of his mentor finally breaks through to have him become more of the Doctor we all know and love, but even after this emotional loss he remains both a commanding and somewhat domineering personality. So where did this anger go? I say it was transferred over time to the receptacle of John Hurt’s character, the alternative Doctor if you like, imprisoned in “The Doctor’s Tomb” to keep this evil at bay and our Doctor under control of his purpose. Therefore, Steven Moffat could introduce John Hurt as “The Doctor” without saying “as Dr. Who”. I also think Moffat will reveal in his “The Last Great Time War” scenario that either an entity such as “The Silence”, who are there in the Tomb, released him, or he escaped for just one moment in time to put in motion the events to start the War. As he says “What I did. I did without choice in the name of peace” Eliminate both sides of an argument in this case the Daleks and the Time Lords and you have, in a warped sense, peace. However, consider also that in the same scene the 11th Doctor acknowledges John Hurts statement as TRUE AND ACCURATE, but then adds that although his actions were “in the name of peace.” Those actions still were “not in the name of the Doctor”. So further consider this possibility that by his chose on words Steven Moffat has all of us going on a wild goose chase over what the birth name of the Doctor is. When in reality the line has nothing to do with that, but is referring to the Humanity of the Time Lord known as the Doctor and that is why John Hurt’s actions are not in his name. Remember in the same scene Matt Smith tells “The Impossible Girl” his real name has no bearing on this moment in actuality. However, the unspoken “PROMISE” the alternative Doctor apparently made of not breaking the Doctor’s beliefs and values does. What say you? ---Davros---
