The question has been raised about whether use of the word shaman to refer to anyone but the Evenki spiritual practitioners constitutes cultural appropriation. Those indigenous activists who make that accusation seldom offer suggestions as to what other word might be used to represent the idea that the term shaman represents in our language today. Does anyone have an idea for a culturally sensitive word that could replace it? I get tired of having this argument with native activists and their advocates.
