The question of evolution vs creation is an issue for many, so, lets look at the issue with honest and open fairness, using proven scientific data and logic, rather than speculation, to establish matters. First, it would be proper to consider that the order in which creation is written down in the bible book of Genesis perfectly harmonizes with proven geological fact, that is, first the creation of plants, then fish, then birds, followed by mammals. Based on the fossil record and other scientific data this would seem like a fairly simple observation, but recall that when the scriptures were written, some 3,500 years ago, such data was not available. How did the writer figure this out? Another point may be made in that the fossil record does not support Darwins theory of gradual change because the sudden appearances of new, unrelated species are found consistently in the different strata, with no gradual changes found (no missing links). There are many references that I could refer to to prove this but let it suffice to quote Carl Sagan in his book, Cosmos, where he said: The fossil evidence could be consistent with the idea of a great designer. _ (New York, 1980) p. 29. This would appear to be why pro-evolution scientists came up with a revised theory of evolution called punctuated equilibrium which propounded that sudden changes in climate or other factors caused sudden, not gradual, major changes in species. However one looks at it, this agrees with the bibles statement that each kind was uniquely created. By the way, there are many scientists in positions of respect in their fields who do not agree with the theory of evolution. Many do believe in a Designer and a few just feel that there is some other explanation for the existence of life. One is professor of biochemistry, Michael Behe, who has spent most of his life studying the complex internal functions of living cells. He wrote a book entitled Darwins Black Box which exposes the concept of molecular evolution as having no foundation in science or logic. Its a hard read but the basic idea is that the simplest of cells is so complex that for it to have developed by accident is a ludicrous suggestion. Like a great city with many parts and complex interactions of these parts in order to exist and function, the cell must have had a designer and creator. Some years ago, a scientist named Stanley Miller performed an experiment with the objective of proving evolution. In a controlled atmosphere he passed an electric charge through some gasses that he said might have been existent in earths early history (speculative) and, as a result, some amino acids formed, which are useful in the formation of proteins, the building blocks of life. However, proteins are far, far more complex and must fold themselves into a very complex shape in order to be of any value and there are many types and shapes of proteins needed to make and maintain a living cell. Is it reasonable to believe that Mr. Miller had proven that evolutionary theory has a sound basis in fact? To answer this lets consider an illustration: a man might find a place in the forest where the wind has caused a few trees to fall on one another in a roughly square pattern. But would he expect to come back a year later and find that the wind had now constructed a house with doors, windows, plumbing, an electrical system, a garden and a protective wall and robotic machines inside that ran and maintained everything? Would he not rather believe that some person had designed and built this place? Besides, if, as Mr. Miller tried to prove with his experiment, these amino acids represent the beginnings of life with no designer or creator, then what or who does Mr. Miller himself represent, if not the intelligent designer? There is much more that I could say on this subject and there are many more scientists that I could refer to but suffice it to say that evolution is far from proven and, indeed, takes a great deal of faith to believe in when one knows and considers all the facts fairly. However, lets look at some more amazing evidence that the bible has an author who knew things that no man could have known at the time in which it was written: The bible book of Job (Jobe) was written at the time of Moses when many thought that the earth was just a large flat plate on the back of a huge turtle swimming in a cosmic sea (they still thought similar things in the times of Columbus), yet notice how Job describes the earth at chapter 26:7 where he talks about God “stretching out the northern sky over empty space, suspending the earth upon nothing”. About 1,000 years later (still 600 years before Christ, or 2600 years ago) the prophet Isaiah in chapter 40:22 said that God is: dwelling above the circle (in Hebrew this can mean sphere) of the earth, the dwellers in which are as grasshoppers, spreading out the heavens just as a fine gauze, like a tent in which to dwell. We now know from real pictures what the planet looks like from space: a sphere, hanging upon nothing, the people looking tinier as one rises and the atmosphere looking like fine gauze on the horizon; an atmosphere that acts like a protective tent, helping to protect us from radiation and detritus coming at us from space, insofar as man has not damaged our tent covering. How could Isaiah know or even suspect such things? Isaiah lived about 600 years before Christ and the telescope wasn’t invented until many years after the time of Christ. One last scientific point: At Isaiah 40:26 it states with reference to Jehovah Gods creation of the stars: due to the abundance of dynamic energy, not one of them is missing. I would like you to consider: just what are the stars made of, is it not energy? That leads to another question that the scriptures dont directly answer: what is God made of? We Know that he is not physical but a spirit and when we are told that man is made in His image the book of Colossians chapter 3:10 says that we are made in the image of “His personality”, albeit an imperfect image at this time because of the rebellion of our progenitor. Actually, in Hebrew the word for image can also mean semblance or shadow. Well, enough of science. In our next communication I want to touch on some doctrinal matters in which the clergy of Christendom have really given God a bad name in the minds of many unenlightened people. For example: what is hell? Where did the devil come from? What happens to us and our loved ones when we die? What future does our loving creator, Jehovah God intend for us?
