The reign of terror unleashed by Maoists on our men in uniform in the state of Chhattisgarh has exposed in unequivocal terms the glaring hole of the existing security apparatus created to tackle Maoist insurgency in the country in an effective manner. The job of the government does not end with mere acknowledgement of Maoist insurgency as a grave threat to the internal security of the country. It should be understood that government’s attempt such as Operation Green Hunt and Salwa Judum to eliminate the menace of left wing extremism through force has not produced any significant results on the ground other than having taken heavy toll on the lives of marginalized. For the first time, Maoists are believed to have been loosing their grip over villages and its inhabitants where they once wielded huge influence. Emergence of positive signs such as an unprecedented larger voter turn out in the Maoist dominated belts during recent state assembly election in Chhattisgarh ,suggesting people’s growing faith in ballot and notable scale of desertion among Maoist groups in recent times needs to be capitalized by the government through appropriate strategy to keep Maoist insurgency at bay. Use of force when necessary and time bound measures to remove the palpable socio- economic deprivation afflicting people living in naxal dominated regions does hold the key to exterminate Maoist insurgency from the ground once and for all
