The rhetoric of "pragmatism" and "realistic" in foreign policy is always a diversion; the implication is that by choosing a "pragmatic," that is a reactionary, aggressive, and acquisitive, policy, one is choosing the ONLY viable policy. So the ideology of policy is not a one of choice, but of constraint. We are to believe that our hands are tied, there are no decisions to be made. For example, it is not our fault that we cancel meetings with Putin over Snowden, but have waffled on giving military aid to the mass-murdering SCAF. This is, apparently, just the realistic thing to do. In fact, we need to applaud our government for having the courage to do the only thing they can conceivably do. Somehow a set of propositions this ridiculous can appear on the front page of our major paper and go mostly un-critiqued.
