The river Bradford the redist and finest trout in the uk Izaak Walton in the compleat angler 1653 I had walked this iconic river a few years back with the river keeper and was amazed by the trout that lived in the clearest river i have ever seen, i knew of walton mentioning them in his book 400 years ago stating the redist he had seen...this was obvious from spotting them in the water but i wanted to see one in the pure flesh.. walking up this river there were mayfly trickling off, the trout were confidently smashing them 2ft above the surface as the spinner laid her eggs..I could not batter these fish, it felt wrong, all i wanted was to catch one of these amazing fish for myself to see if walton was talking shit! I soon found a decent fish in flat clear water which came and looked at my mayfly pattern and turned away!! I knew i had to look for some moving water and there she was inches from the surface awaiting the mayfly.. it looked redist in the water and when it swallowed my mayfly it fought like a wild scottish loch brown!! i had to go steady on this pounder as it had power i had never experieced for a small fish.. I soon realised why... it had oversized fins to massive proportion of its body size!! At last i had in my hand the holy strain of brown trout that was mentioned 400 years ago! yes it was the nicest brown i have ever seen, it has a red sheen all the way down its flanks with white tip fins and most impressive was the huge pectoral fins!! they were the same colour of a Rudd!! Well one thing for sure, Izaak Walton did not talk bollocks, they really are the redist and finest in the UK!! This river has not been messed with and to see a strain of trout from all them years ago is magic.. tonight i lived the dream.. This river is basically unfished and looked after by the Haddon estate, who run a non clichey syndicate on the Wye, Lathkill, Derwent and Bradford..contact Jan Hobot if you ever want to fish.. sweet G
