The sixth candidate I am supporting is my friend Mark Takano, who is running for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in Californias 41st Congressional District. Mark was first elected in November 2012, making history as the first openly-LGBT member of Congress from California, and the first openly-LGBT person of color ever to be elected to the House. A longtime teacher from humble roots, Marks grandparents and parents were removed from their homes and sent to Japanese-American internments camps during World War II. Mark graduated from Harvard College in 1983, working his way through college by busing tables, and then embarked upon a distinguished career as a public school teacher and local elected official. A vocal champion for human rights and social justice for all people, Mark was an original co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Student Non-Discrimination Act, and the Respect for Marriage Act, and he currently serves on the House Veterans Affairs Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Mark is currently being challenged by a right-wing conservatives who have made a campaign issue out of the immense compassion he has shown--personally and politically--for the many Central American children who have been caught up in the so-called border crisis. He needs all the support we can give him to ensure his re-election to Congress. Click here to learn more about Mark and to support his campaign: marktakano/
