The standard of written and spoken English here in this country is appalling. But no one seems to be bothered.... 1) Teachers have to keep passing kids with sub-standard English because you cant possibly keep failing the kids as it will hurt the teachers KPI; 2) Coursemates will realise that any effort to improve their level of English is moot, since those who can barely write, still pass; 3) Many are comfortable enough that they are surrounded by fellow mother-tongue-speaking colleagues and friends that it bares no imperative for them to speak English; 4) The people here are not bothered that they may need to articulate arguments and ideas to someone/anyone outside of their cultural circle; 5) Singaporeans are still living in a cocoon thinking the world of themselves, while our regional neighbours are now able to communicate better, and compete globally......
