The stark contrasts between gulfs of soul-crushing black and bleak, barely alive grey/white were never more evocative of despair and annihilation than in Kiss Me Deadly (55), imho. The opening is devastatingly effective. Abandonment, fear, sobbing, Nat King Cole, mystery, a convertible, and radical titles... and no dialogue that really amounts to more than Get in! And thats just how the damned thing begins!
