"The subject, who appears in different guises in several other paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn and his contemporaries, wears a plumed hat and metal breastplate." This is fascinating to me. He looks "unbalanced" with the watery eyes and unshaven face. I truly wonder if he was painted because he was poor and available for modeling or if he was some sort of village character...Just look carefully at the face. Now I want to see other paintings of this fellow.
