The sun has set over the Sierra Nevada, with 138 teams still on the trail. Last years top two finishers are out, as Rusty Toth did not start and Jennifer Waitte pulled. The same three leaders have been riding together for hours; they are past River Crossing a full 40 minutes ahead of last years pace. Gwen Hall is closing, and Junior rider Barrak Blakeley is about 25 minutes further back, in 5th. In six miles they will hit the last trail vet check, leaving six more miles to the finish. Looks like it will be a really competitive ride to the end. There have been only a dozen pulls for metabolic reasons -- a real testament to the training and care the riders are taking of their mounts. Our thoughts are with the riders who have many miles to go in the dark as they pursue the dream of a completion.
