The symbolism of Obamas change and yes, we can was about Americans - TopicsExpress

The symbolism of Obamas change and yes, we can was about Americans electing someone from a historically marginalised and brutalised minority as their President. Most of his opponents saw him as progressive and as not truly American, etc. The rhetoric of post-racial America was linked to the ability of African American and other minorities to have an equal say. {of course, the reality of Obama has been very different, often disappointing but the symbolism of his initial victory and the hope of African Americans that he embodied cannot be denied} On the other hand, Modis change and yes, we can is an opposite vision. It is unapologetically majoritarian, puts the onus on minorities to erase their identity to join the norm of majority or face disenfranchisement, adopts the position of being more truly Indian than others, and offers nothing that passes of as progressive. When the vision and symbolism itself are so problematic, one dreads to think what the reality would be. We will find out.
