The thing I dread the most as a cyclist happened to me today. The chain on my road bike broke about 20km into my Sunday morning ride. But just as I was resigned to pushing the bike to the petrol station where I was supposed to meet a cyclist friend, a car with a roof rack stopped. Out came a pair of young men who immediately realized my predicament and offered to strap the bike to the rack and take me where I was going. They said as fellow bikers, they were only too happy to help out a brother. Ten years ago, I would have been quite helpless in a situation like that. Now, thanks to a surge in cycling in Penang, the pedal-power fraternity is not only a force to be reckoned with, but also a seemingly ubiquitous source of assistance for those who need it.
