The thing about choices is, it’s really hard to un-make them. One of the hardest choices to un-make is the choice to say mean words. Once they are said, they can’t be un-said. It’s like you are making a batch of your favorite cookies. You dump in the flour, you stir in the baking soda but then, instead of a cup of sugar, you dump in a cup of salt! Taking back words that should not have been spoken is as hard as picking out every grain of salt that should not have been dumped… maybe harder. So this week, while you practice thinking before you speak, have a little fun thinking before you mix up these ingredients to make some yummy cookies… if you choose carefully. Some ingredients are straightforward but other ingredients have a choice. The ingredient you choose could be the difference between a sweet treat and a bitter mess. Which will you choose? Ingredients: 1 cup butter, softened; *1 cup white sugar or 1 cup white salt; *1 cup ground coffee beans or 1 cup packed brown sugar; 2 eggs; *2 teaspoons vinegar or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract; 3 cups all purpose flour; *1 teaspoon baking soda or 1 teaspoon diet soda; 2 teaspoons hot water; ½ teaspoon salt; *2 cups black-eyed peas or 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips; 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional) How To: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Cream together the butter, *white sugar or salt, and *coffee beans or brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the * vinegar or vanilla. Dissolve *baking soda or diet soda in hot water. Add to batter along with ½ teaspoon salt. Stir in flour, * black-eyed peas or chocolate chips, and nuts. Drop by large spoonfuls onto ungreased pans. Bake for about 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are nicely browned.
