The thing is, if the U.S. makes this type of change, it would be viewed as a move towards socialism (Im all for socialism....look at how well Canada works under socialism, not to mention many European countries). And we all know how much right-wing Americans feel about anything remotely socialist (...universal healthcare, for example...) and them labeling it communist. Its the fear of criticism, the fear of the unknown, and the fear of abandoning our traditionalist way of life (like the penny, we keep it around even though it costs $0.02 to produce; the nickel costs $0.09 to produce, causing a deficit of over 100 million yearly just because those coins are part of a tradition) that keep the U.S. from moving forward. This is why, in the recent past, many countries have surpassed the U.S., which many consider or considered to be the greatest country in the world, in healthcare, education, debt, finance and many other fronts. The only thing were #1 is in gun ownership and homicides, and those are stats no country wants to rank top in.
