The title of this study says it all - Complication rate after circumcision in a paediatric surgical setting should not be neglected. This study brings to attention two important points. First of all, the risks of circumcision are very much real. More than 5% of the boys in this study had significant complications. Problems such as meatal stenosis are woefully underappreciated in the US, not to mention the numerous other short- and long-term problems. Second of all, they appropriately refer to circumcision as a ritual procedure in this article. In the US, it truly has become almost a rite of passage. Parents speak with pride that they subjected their child to this procedure (often even bragging about how well their child did during it), that their childs penis now matches his fathers. This isnt about health. Its about a misguided tradition. Routine infant circumcision must end.
