The town of Galena, Nevada formed between 1863 and 1868 as a result of silver and lead discoveries. Some estimates placed the mineral extractions at around $5,000,000. The townsite was platted in 1869 and boasted four mercantile stores, several saloons, bawdy houses and other businesses. The local population grew to several hundred residents after a water system was developed. Galena continued to grow through the 1870s. Two stage lines offered one-way trips from Battle Mountain to Galena for $3. The White and Shiloh Consolidated Silver Mining Company, owner of the Battle Mountain, Shiloh, and White mines, built a $60,000, 50-ton concentrating mill in 1875. Galenas mines started to play out in the early 1880s. Although a fire in 1889 destroyed the mill and assay office, the town still has a sizable cemetery and extensive mining ruins. Galena is now completely deserted. DIRECTIONS: From Battle Mountain, head south on Nevada 305 for 9.4 miles. Exit right and follow for 3 miles to Galena. CAUTION: You should treat ghost town explorations much like you would a wilderness backcountry trip. Open mine shafts and old buildings present many dangerous hazards to an unwary visitor. Stay alert and aware. Always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. Carry sufficient gas, water and food. Services are few and far between and mobile devices are typically useless. Always remember: take nothing but pictures, kill nothing but time.
