The tragedy at Franklin Regional this morning has been weighing heavy on my heart all day. This horrible tragedy hits so close to home because its so close to where I grew up, is the school district where I did my student teaching, and because Im a mom/step-mom to teenagers .But as Ive watched this story unfold all day, my heart breaks a little more with each news clip and FB status and the comments that follow. People, please be decent. Please be kind. Please dont use this horrible tragedy to further your own political agendas about gun control or spirituality. Please dont speculate about the boy who did this and his state of mind. We dont know what drove him to do this and to lash out and blame anyone - his parents, the school, other students, etc. is just irresponsible and reckless. I cant possibly make sense of this thing. None of us can. But what we can do is use this to talk to our children. We can talk to our kids about kindness and tolerance and decency. We can talk to our kids about not being judgmental and about reaching out to extend help to those who need it. We can talk to our kids about asking for help if they need it and not being scared of being labeled weak or crazy. We can use this as an opportunity to talk to our kids about the way they treat others or allow others to be treated. We can use this as a chance to model those behaviors for our kids instead of taking to FB or Twitter and lashing out and being unkind and intolerant. How will we ever expect our kids to create an environment of love and acceptance and strength of character in themselves and in our schools if we dont model that same behavior in our homes and on social media?
