The train services have in my view now hit an all time low You are actually ostracised if you have a disability confining you to a wheel chair, and I think we are one of the only countries in Europe where you need to inform authorities of your disability before travel on public transport a breach of the UN Convention of disability rights I believe!!!!!!! Major issues I see and have been told are ... Wheel chair passengers are required to book 24 hours in advance Typically the train can accommodate only 4 wheel chair passengers . The onus is on the person in a wheel chair to contact iarnann road eirann 24 hours ahead of travel Then when traveling on the train the onus is on the wheel chair user to contact the destination stop to let them know they are arriving and thus take out the ramps. This system means A . The independence of wheel chair users is compromised , you cant just decide to go to dublin to see friends or if you have bad news you must book the train 24 hours before travel. B. The train must be booked and if the people with walking aids or childrens buggies decide to travel or more often than not luggage gets stored in the wheel chair space. C. In athy if you are traveling by train going to carlow or southbound you must ring the ticket office 48 hours before travel because the exit on the dublin road used by wheelchair users is locked. The oncoming train is moved to platform one where traditionally it would have been on platform 2. This is very obtrusive to people in wheel chairs as not everyone knows this TO HIGHLIGHT THIS AND OTHER PROBLEMS I WILL TRAVEL TO DUBLIN WITH A GROUP OF 3 WHEELCHAIR PASSENGERS ON A FRIDAY IN DECEMBER. WE WILL LOG OUR DAY AND TAKE A FEW SNAPS...OH AND WE WONT BE RINGING BEFORE HAND ... Come on Irish Rail sort this out
