The training industry has a lot of organizations and programs and to the average person it might not mean much but to us trainers, it means a lot. It means we have a supportive core where we can find colleagues and education and a community. I have been a member of the APDT and while I love the continuing education aspect, I can no longer be a member. Here is the email I sent this evening in response to the membership renewal reminder: I wanted to let you know that Im really having a hard time renewing my membership. I really want to be aligned with an organization that does not allow the use of shock on our pets. I feel that it is important for me to stick with my ethics and send my money and support to a truly force-free and humane organization. I hope that in the future you reconsider the use of shock on our pets and adopt a more humane hierarchy. I hope this is a message that travels far and wide within that organization. They have so much potential and so many wonderful people on board, however to support, condone, endorse the use of shock on a dog is simply not my cup of tea. I lose many wonderful benefits but... ...Im putting my money where it belongs. Where its truly force-free.
