The true state of Nigeria at 53 revealed Signs abound to inform and prepare the Nigerian patriot that still All is not well with our dear country. For me the most suitable evidence of Nigeria at 53 state is the nature of Nigeria Telecommunication (NITEL) equipments dotted across the nation. Least we suppose that Nigeria is an exemption let us examine Ghana. Ghana government until she sold her Ghana Telecom to Vodafone, the land line telephone system was good and functioning. With the purchase by Vodafone, services has improved, land line calls sustained, cable Internet enhanced and more workers hired. The Nigeria story as much as we may murmur, and some of us with nonchalant attitude towards the affairs empower the politicians stupidly will continue to witness degradation in things that matter most. True development is sustainable, the inability to maintain and improve our cable communication system just because the mobile system was introduced is completely unacceptable and ridiculous. Strange enough many mock the current trend of Nigeria’s telecommunication cable system, feeling that its demise best demonstrate the end of few access to talking on phone. There were days of course when many would go to a friend or neighbor to answer a telephone call from a relative but the GSM eradicated such practice. The intent of this article is not to commend that era but to prove that lack of maintenance culture has denied our great country many opportunities. Land line is still important today and even more than in those earlier times. The Nigeria telecommunication equipments depicted herein reveals the true nature of Nigeria democracy at 53 of independence. Instead of a covered unit, it is open but confirms the irony that our system as open as it appears does not function. There is a strong pillar, just like the works of our heroes past but such concrete foundation is like a grave. The twisted cables enhance our confused relationship religiously, socially and politically. Nigeria system is messed up, with ugly appearance and discouraging demeanor. Imagine in a land were everything can be stolen, it is surprising that the worst of a Nigerian criminal equally abandons or neglects to take without authorization this equipment. When a thief finds no worth in the equipment, it sends more messages across. Of what use then is this to the sons and daughters of Nigeria? Perhaps many younger generation would wonder what exactly is this equipment? An installation in the public domain with the appearance of a museum. All is not lost yet, and it can be revamped, the Nigerian land line system can be totally transformed and instead of being an eyesore prove to the world that we are not just building new sandy projects but we are restoring the solid critical infrastructures that will affect positively our economy. Any government with the true agenda to restore what we once had, what we once cherished, what once mattered will indeed fulfill the prophecy of not allowing our heroes labors to be in vain. Nigeria at 53 should look inward, take an inventory of our assets and inject the appropriate remedy to bring them all back alive. Restoration is key, maintenance is paramount and in this wisdom gradually introduce new infrastructures that are solid and would take Nigeria to its rightful place in the global Economy.
