The veterans were taking part in an “honor flight,” as reported by Ben Swann: The honor flight is a national organization that provides free flights to and from Washington D.C. for World War II Veterans. For many of these veterans, this is the first and only time they have visited the National Memorial. According to reports from Leo Shane, a reporter with Stars and Stripes, about 8-12 members of Congress distracted park police while the veterans knocked over barricades to gain entry to the memorial. As reported by Fox News and other outlets, about eight Republican Congressmen, led by Steve King and Michele Bachmann, among others, helped the veterans break protocol by assisting them through the barriers and by providing distractions for the park police.
