The way corporations define their purpose can determine their future. If the railroad industry had thought of itself as a transporter rather than a train company, they could have become the leaders in air travel and trucking. Had U. S. Steel thought of itself as a container maker rather than a tin can maker, they had the capital and facilities to become king of the aluminum can industry with only modest modification. The enormously wealthy oil industry faces a similar situation. If they begin thinking of themselves as energy providers rather than fossil fuel suppliers, they face a bright future as providers of wind, solar, hydrogen and other forms of renewable energy. Otherwise, they face the dismal fate of the shortsighted dinosaurs who came before them.
