The wild coffee plant (Coffea arabica) is indigenous to Ethiopia, where it was discovered in about AD850, and was cultivated in the Arabian colony of Harar. It then spread to Mecca, from whence it was taken home by pilgrims to other parts of the Islamic world. Two other species of coffee, C. !iberica and C. robusta, a cross between C. arabica and C. liberica, were later discovered in Africa. C. robusta is noted for its resistance to disease, hence its specific epithet, and is grown on native smallholdings in West Africa.
