The world at large does not want to deal with the deity of Jesus. We prefer to relegate Jesus to the realm of moral philosophers or great teachers - the realm of good men who set good examples for people who think they are already basically good, to live by. I would say that if you want to cherry pick the historical record and only choose certain things Jesus said over others then you can create a Jesus you can live with. We like the Jesus who said things like judge not and blessed are the peacemakers but not the Jesus who requires that we lay down our lives to follow Him, who declares that the only way to a relationship with God is through the one who says I am the way, the truth and the life!
