The world is getting ever more interesting. We are living in the era of emerging new independent city states. Scotland (while not really a small city) is holding a referendum to secede from the United Kingdom this September. Catalonia (whose capital is Barcelona) is planning to hold one this November to secede from Spain. And heres Venice, the beautiful historic state which was once the sovereign Republic of Venice, trying to separate from Italy. Is this necessarily good in terms of geopolitics? I think so.
