The world often claims that it is weakness to rely upon faith in God to guide our decisions; that we are stronger if we alone are in control of our lives. This is a lie based on an illusion. No one makes decisions within a vacuum. We all build our values from the outside in. A person who knows where his/her values come from is always stronger and wiser, because they can better engage in their decisions. Since our identity come from God, we have a Source to which we can go and receive our guidance. The ungodly have no source for guidance; because they believe they are the only ones guiding their actions. They refuse to believe in a power higher than themselves. What they think makes them strong is actually their greatest weakness. It is important to become more “self-aware”, but without the guiding presence of a higher authority, what we find within ourselves has very little meaning. God is the Rosetta stone for the human soul. Without God’s transforming words we are like people who peer intensely into a mirror only to quickly forget the face we see the moment we look away (James 1:23-24). The reason many of us seek earthly companionship is because we know that others, particularly those we love, reveal and lend meaning to our lives. When we become husbands or wives, do we consider it a weakness if out of love we define ourselves according to what would make us a better spouse? When we become parents, is it weakness to see some purpose for our lives reflected in our children’s faces? The life lived in relationship to others is perhaps the greatest joyful identity achieved in any life. The highest source for this kind of identity is the One who created us. When we go to God for our identity we go to the foundation upon which all other houses we would build will stand.
