The world we live in may not be as violent as it used to be but that could change without warning. The world we live in is not without challenges. The challenges we know our students will face in their lifetime are the challenges we want to help them prepare for. TTJ is first and foremost a school of self defense and survival skills. If we had Huns massing on the border, we would be preparing for an imminent threat. Our classes would look different and they would have a completely different energy. Violence is rare in our society, but conflict is not. We practice de-escalation and conflict management skills to decrease the likelihood of a violent encounter. We can prevent a vast amount of self defense situations with situational awareness and rational thinking. In those rare situations that we need to defend ourselves, we want to use “stun and run” tactics to survive and get to safety. Few people ever think about aftermath. After math is the moments after the conflict which can include police involvement, the emergency room, physical therapy, mental therapy and possibly funeral arrangements. Conflict should be avoided but if you are left no other choice, you should react swiftly and decisively. If we were truly left with no other choice, our actions will be morally and legally justified. That will go a long way in helping to deal with the aftermath.
