Theantdaily Given the lame central authority, do we have a government? Ahmad Mustapha Hassan OUTSPOKEN: In this day and age where countries and governments are forging ahead to create a more conducive environment so that their citizens can achieve a more comfortable and higher living status, Malaysia is facing a future full of uncertainties. This is so because at the moment the country seems to have no effective government. The crime rate is soaring and robberies seem to be the order of the day. The Islamic religious authorities, without any careful thought, are arrogantly pursuing what they deemed was their duty by burying several dead persons according to Islamic rites without verifying first the practising religion of the deceased person. Their brash acts only create animosity towards the government and the Islamic religion. They also disrupted a non-Muslim wedding to ascertain the religious practice of the bride without due concern that their raid caused unhappiness to the 400 guests attending the function. This kind of “Gestapo” acts does not bring credit to the Islamic faith. It only causes the non-Muslims to abhor and give scant respect to Islam. Another Islamic agency in another state raided another wedding, to seek out transgenders attending this significant event. But the government seems to be silent on the matter. This only raises the question of whether the government is functioning or not. The police too are taking their own course in carrying out their duties. They refused to comply with the decision of the civil court and had their own idea on how things need to be done. This has never happened before. The police have a duty to comply with the law. They cannot determine on their own what they should do and not do. Since when have the police become an independent entity? The Syariah Court has been deemed as being not at par with the civil court. The laws of the country and their interpretation are determined by the civil court and there are no two ways about it. And again there is mute response from the government on this situation. There has been no official reprimand on this untoward behaviour by the police. Where is the government of the day? The Cadbury chocolate saga was indeed a shameful affair. There was no coordination among the agencies involved in pronouncing that the chocolates contained porcine DNA. This action simply boosted Cadbury’s image. They did not have to spend a single cent in getting such widespread publicity for their chocolates. Is the government aware of what it has been doing if ever it is still in existence! There was also this government backbencher who demonised the Malaysian Indians by labelling them as robbers. He was not admonished by the government nor was there any reaction from the Indian component parties in the government. They simply seemed to accept whatever insults that had been thrown at them and their community. There seems to be a lot of chaos in the country at the moment. The Islamic authority in Selangor defied the direct order of the Attorney-General to return the 321 seized bibles to the Bible Society of Malaysia. This show of impudence only indicates that there has been a breakdown in the system of authority in the government. The religious authorities in the various states have now become more powerful than the central government. The Umno/BN government had actually created monsters out of its desire to please the Muslim voters. Now these agencies are out of control. Yet this kind of anti-establishment showmanship and arrogant stand had been tolerated by the authorities. Therefore, the question is: Is the government still in existence! The groups that had been attacking the non-Malays are simply allowed to carry on with their insolent and unbecoming behaviour. There has been no attempt at all to punish them or to restrain their activities. There are so many negative elements springing up in the country which are most alarming to the well-being of the people and yet no positive and corrective actions have been instituted. This sort of anti-national and anti-unity development is only exhibited in the absence of an effective government. Malaysia badly needs a government that is effective in ensuring that the welfare of the people and the country is moving forward and not having a bunch of braggarts and wasteful spenders of people’s money. The lawlessness by even official agencies indicates the lack of effective central authority. No government agency should show defiance towards law and order. It looks as if things are getting out of hand. As it is, it can easily be surmised that Malaysia has no government at all.
