Theoretical physicist Paul Steinhardt says that its not just the BICEP2 gravitational waves findings that are uncertain. He believes that there is a more fundamental problem with theory of cosmic inflation (which the cosmic ripples are supposed to prove). “The inflationary paradigm is fundamentally untestable, and hence scientifically meaningless,” he writes in a Nature opinion piece. Steinhardt was one of the early contributors of inflation theory but he later became an outspoken critic of it.
