There are a LOT of problems with this, too many to cover them all but let me at least point out a few. First, look at the picture accompanying this article. If this is your form in plank, be prepared for serious low back issues down the road. The woman in this picture desperately needs to use her core more. By trying to out do someone else you can easily overdo, lose form, and in the long-term cause injuries. Second, one of the best things about yoga is developing better self awareness, specifically things like better proprioception (where you are in space) and body awareness (whats going on inside you). If you are constantly focused on what someone else is doing you dont give yourself the chance for a deeper understanding of what YOU are doing. And this brings me to my third and final point, mindfulness and focus. These things can enhance every part of your life. Just eating mindfully can make your food taste better. And being mindful in a yoga practice can get you there. Unless youre busy worrying about whether youre keeping up with or surpassing someone else. So, in conclusion, while a group practice can help keep you on target because of a little peer pressure and a lot of encouragement, holding plank longer because youve been told someone else can do it is not a healthy practice...
