There are a number of risk factors associated with an increased likelihood of developing diabetes during pregnancy, including age, ethnicity, obesity, family history of diabetes, and past pregnancy history. Despite significant progress in the care of women affected by diabetes in pregnancy, maternal and fetal/infant complications are still present. Treatment goals, that lead to normal blood glucose levels, should include management plans(diet, exercise, oral diabetes agents, and insulin), which have been shown to reduce pregnancy complications. The fetus of patients with poorly controlled diabetes is at risk for sudden fetal death, large babies, infants with dangerously low blood sugars, jaundice, and permanent nerve injuries. On the other hand, the need for cesarean deliveries and fetal/infant complications are significantly lower among patients with good diabetes control. Women with a history of pregnancy induced diabetes are at significant risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life and should have repeat diabetes testing 2-3 months after delivery. #gestationaldiabetes
